Lucille - Author Biography

Lucille

Hi, I’m Lucille!  But you can call me Lu. I’m your La Spezia and Cinque Terre travel expert.

I’m co-owner and lead author of the La Spezia Guide blog and local business directory and I’m obsessed with traveling and with helping fellow travelers craft unique and memorable holidays.

Travel and Life

Map of Lucille's travels

When I travel it isn’t just a holiday; it’s how I experience life. With nearly 40 countries explored and countless adventures under my belt, I’ve traded the ordinary for the extraordinary. For me, stepping foot on foreign soil is about the allure of the unknown, the thrill of discovery, and the richness of diverse cultures.

Lucille walking the Great Wall of China

One of my most unforgettable experiences was walking on the Great Wall of China, an ancient marvel that left me humbled by its scale and history. I was 23 years old and solo traveling in China with zero local language and no international roaming!  The feeling of standing on this immense structure was truly awe-inspiring and fed a hunger for more adventure.

My love for adventure led me to scuba dive in the Great Barrier Reef, compete in a triathlon in Sydney Harbour and hike mountains on six different continents, including the majestic Kilimanjaro in Africa.

Justin & Lu exhausted but ecstatic to have reached the Kilimanjaro summit

A completely different kind of adventure awaited me in South Africa, where I immersed myself in cheetah rehabilitation and Big 5 research. The opportunity to contribute to the conservation of these magnificent creatures was incredibly rewarding.

Hiking into Machu Picchu was another highlight. Seeing the ancient Inca citadel, nestled amidst breathtaking Andean mountains left me awe-struck, and (after recovering from the horror of altitude sickness), I went on to tour the magical Galápagos Islands, this trip was a once-in-a-lifetime dream come true.

Lu and Justin Backpacking in Europe

Every trip has shaped me into the adventurous and curious person I am today. They’ve instilled in me a deep appreciation for different cultures, landscapes, and the incredible diversity of our planet.

The younger me was painfully shy, but through travel, I’ve learned to step outside my comfort zone, embrace challenges, and find joy in exploring the unknown. I feel utterly privileged to have experienced all this.

Living Overseas

My passion for exploration has taken me far beyond the boundaries of tourism. Having studied in the United States, and lived and worked in diverse countries such as South Africa, England, and Australia (and now Italy), I’ve honed my ability to adapt to new cultures, navigate unfamiliar environments, and overcome logistical challenges.

These experiences have equipped me with a unique skill set in planning and executing international travel, from securing visas and accommodations to understanding local customs and navigating public transportation.

My overseas adventures have not only broadened my horizons but I’ve adopted a global perspective allowing me to offer insights and recommendations that go beyond the typical tourist experience and in turn helping my readers to create truly authentic and memorable journeys.

Travel in Italy

Italy, with its rich history, stunning landscapes, and warm-hearted people, has always held a special place in my heart. From the bustling metropolis of Rome to the romantic canals of Venice, from the artistic treasures of Florence to the fashion capital of Milan, for Over 20 years, I’ve explored the Italian tourist hubs. But my passion lies in discovering the hidden gems, the authentic experiences, and the true essence of this beautiful country.

Our Wedding in Positano Italy

Amongst my travels, there’s one that holds a special place in my heart: getting married in the picturesque town of Positano. Surrounded by the stunning Amalfi Coast, I exchanged vows with Justin, my partner in love and life. Standing on the panoramic balcony of Hotel Marinacato we created memories that will last a lifetime. This experience solidified my deep connection with Italy and its captivating charm.

La Spezia: My Home Base for Italian Adventures

I’m thrilled to call La Spezia home. This vibrant coastal city is my perfect base for exploring the stunning Ligurian Riviera and other parts of Italy. La Spezia is often overlooked by tourists, but it offers a genuine Italian experience, with delicious seafood, an interesting historic center, and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s also an excellent gateway to some of Italy’s most iconic destinations such as Cinque Terre, Portofino, Pisa, and Florence.

Now, as a local resident of La Spezia, I’m not just a visitor sharing tips; I’m living and breathing this adventure, offering a unique insider’s perspective on La Spezia, Cinque Terre, and the nearby Gulf of Poets towns such as Porto Venere, Lerici, Sarzana and Tellaro.

Sharing My Passion

As a travel blogger, I’m buzzing to share my knowledge and enthusiasm for this incredible region.

Whether you’re an adventure seeker, a culture vulture, a hungry foodie or simply looking to relax and recharge, then La Spezia and the Gulf of Poets area has something to offer everyone.

But more than anything my real passion is to inspire more people to embrace the hidden nooks of Italy. Yes! Cinque Terre is a drawcard, and can’t be ignored, but beyond this immediate honey pot, those travelers who read my blog to seek a slow travel experience will find a clear path to a deeper embrace of authentic Italian culture.

Whether you’re planning your first trip to La Spezia and Liguria, or your tenth, I’m here to share my insights and recommendations to help you craft your Italian adventure with enduring memories.

If this sounds like your vibe, then I think you’ll find value in reading my content in our La Spezia – Insider Guide!

Wishing you happy travels
