Often overshadowed by the magic of Cinque Terre, Portovenere is a coastal treasure that offers a full day of exploration, beauty, and history. All without the intense Cinque Terre crowds.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this colorful harbor town combines medieval charm, dramatic sea views, and a slower pace that invites you to linger.
Whether you’re staying in La Spezia, Cinque Terre, or Lerici, or you’re a cruise ship passenger docking at La Spezia for the day, this itinerary will inspire you to visit Portovenere. Even if you only have a day or two in Cinque Terre, with ferries and buses connecting the region, it's an easy and worthwhile detour.
If I had to choose, by far, this is my favourite town to spend the day!
Despite its beauty and significance, Portovenere remains somewhat off the beaten path and overlooked by many who flock to Cinque Terre.
For the more attentive traveler, the culture, history, atmosphere, and scenery will exceed your expectations.
Start the Day: Arrive by Sea and Enjoy the View
The ride to Portovenere along the Gulf of Poets is already worth the journey. As you pull into Portovenere’s tiny harbor, the iconic tall tower houses lining the waterfront greet you with a palette of colors.
From the ferry dock:
- Head toward Piazza Bastreri (Portovenere’s main square).
- Step through the ancient stone archway and enter Via Giovanni Capellini, the narrow pedestrian lane that winds through the medieval heart of town.
- Explore local artisan shops offering ceramics, leather goods, amazing food, and coastal keepsakes.
- Continue uphill to visit the Church of San Lorenzo, and further up, the Doria Castle. Enjoy a panoramic view of Portovenere and the Ligurian Sea.
Refuel and Stop for Lunch
If you only have one day in Portovenere, then you’ll be spoilt for good restaurants to choose from. Depending on your mood, you can indulge in elevated cuisine and sea views or rustic charm and local dishes.

Afternoon: Grottos, Legends, and Coastal Walks
After lunch, head toward the famous promontory where two major sights await:
- Church of St. Peter: Perched on the rocks above the crashing sea, this black-and-white striped church was built in 1198 over a former Roman temple to Venus. From its terrace, the views are breathtaking.
- Lord Byron’s Grotto: Just below the church, this rocky cove once inspired poets like Byron and Shelley. It’s a great spot to take in the atmosphere… or a chance for a quick swim!
Depending on your pace, you can:
- Return via the harborfront for a coffee or gelato.
- Continue along the bay to the public beach (even with just one day in Portovenere, you can still make time for a refreshing dip)!
- Or, explore the area behind the castle for lesser-known hiking trails and viewpoints.
Evening: Return to Cinque Terre or Stay Local
Most ferries leave Portovenere by late afternoon, but your day doesn’t have to end there. Depending on your plans:
- Return to Riomaggiore (by ferry) for a romantic walk along the Path of Love, or enjoy dinner with a view at Manarola.
- Or, stay local and get the ferry or bus back to La Spezia, enjoying an aperitivo at Porto Mirabello followed by dinner in La Spezia’s old town.
Either way, the day ends with good food, sea breezes, and a deep satisfaction at having explored one of Liguria’s most beautiful coastal towns.

Optional Add-On: A Short Hike or Island Escape
Looking to add some adventure to your Portovenere day trip?
- 2-hour loop hike: From Piazza Bastreri, follow the steep trail behind the tower. After around 1.5 hours, reach Rifugio Muzzerone for lunch with panoramic views before descending back into town.
- Palmaria Island: A 10-minute taxi boat ride away, this quiet island offers nature trails, swimming spots, and lunch with a view. It’s ideal if you’re visiting in spring, summer, or early autumn.

One Day in Portovenere Vs Cinque Terre
If you only have one day in the area, then Portovenere is probably the closest substitute you get to the 5 towns of Cinque Terre.
And in my humble opinion, you can do and experience more in Portovenere than you can in any of the individual Cinque Terre towns. Sure, as a combined destination, the 5 towns are unmissable; but comparing it against any one town, Portovenere stands its ground.
This is especially true in the height of tourist season when Cinque Terre can get overrun with day trippers.
One Day in Portovenere is it Worth it?
With just one day in Portovenere, you can:
- Visit ancient churches and castles
- Discover literary landmarks
- Sunbathe and swim in turquoise waters
- Savor Ligurian cuisine (I have always had great seafood here)
- Explore medieval laneways
- Buy artisanal leather goods, clothes, and jewelry
- Or simply sit with a view of the sea, eat gelato, and unwind against this unique backdrop
Portovenere is the kind of place that stays with you. Long after the ferry carries you away, you will have lingering memories of this special place.
