So, you're lucky enough to be docking in the lively port city of La Spezia! This is your gateway to one of Italy's most stunning coastal regions, the Ligurian Riviera.
Not only is La Spezia close to some of Italy’s most famous attractions, but you also have the chance to visit some of the lesser-known sightseeing gems!
A Little About Us
Ciao! We are Justin & Lu.

We live here and authentically share everything we know to help visitors experience the best of Italy!
Buon Viaggio!
This post is specially for cruise passengers. Each of the day trip ideas takes into account your limited time at port, and I also provide useful transport info, so you can plan a D.I.Y. excursion!
Let’s jump right in and take a look at the best day trip options, from La Spezia suitable for cruise passengers.
1. Cinque Terre:
These colorful villages and UNESCO national park are a holiday maker’s dream. You can wander winding alleys, admire the vibrant houses, savor the local seafood, and hike the historic coastal trails.
The picturesque fishing villages, terraced vineyards, and olive groves are a favorite among tourists. And not forgetting the coastal views, which are breathtaking.
What To See & Do
Cinque Terre is an easy day trip from La Spezia. But as a cruise passenger on a clock, you won’t have time to see all the villages (unless you just want to take a few quick photos, which I never recommend). But you can comfortably see 2 or 3 of the famous villages in one day without breaking a sweat.
If you’re fit and active, then hiking between the villages is a truly special experience. If you’re looking for an easy walk, along a flat paved path, then check out the Via dell’Amore (Path of Love).
How to Make it Special
You can easily do a self-guided tour of the villages. If you do this, then I recommend taking a little time to read up on the history of the area. Or add on a short hiking tour or winery and tasting experience with a guide to help you connect with and appreciate Cinque Terre’s rich culture.
Another very popular way to experience the Cinque Terre villages is by boat tour. These tours include sightseeing around the Gulf of Poets and a visit to one or two of the towns. The towns are particularly striking from the water!

This itinerary includes insider tips, optimized timing to match cruise all-aboard schedules, and essential transport details from the La Spezia cruise terminal.
Getting to Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre is in La Spezia province and only a short journey from La Spezia city. There are a few transport options.
If you go by train, then you can avoid the long queues and purchase your all-day ticket (Cinque Terre Card) in advance. Need more detailed transport info? Take a look at these helpful articles:
2. Portovenere
Another perfect day trip from La Spezia is to Portovenere (sometimes written as Porto Venere).
Portovenere (often nicknamed the 6th Cinque Terre town) is more than just another historic town. Its pastel-hued tall houses stand to attention against the backdrop of an imposing castle fort. The sparkling aquamarine waters of the Gulf of Poets and the tiny harbor create a visual masterpiece that shouldn’t be overlooked.
What To See & Do
You can’t visit Portovenere without seeing the iconic Church of St. Peter. Perched dramatically on a rocky promontory, the church is a striking sight to behold.
The old town laneway (carugio) and harbor front also offer an opportunity to explore, buy artisanal gifts and capture mesmerizing photos.
How to Make it Special
Portovenere isn't just about history and beauty. There are several places to swim and sunbathe, including the Grotta Byron (named after Lord Byron who spent time here).
You can also access the local hiking trails where you can work up an appetite to enjoy Ligurian cuisine at some of the best seafood restaurants in the area!

Our NO-stress, ready-to-use, and affordable ‘One Day in Portovenere’ itinerary may be just what you’re looking for.
Despite its beauty and significance, Portovenere remains somewhat off the beaten path and overlooked by many who flock to Cinque Terre.
For the more attentive traveler, the culture, history, atmosphere, and scenery will exceed your expectations.
Getting to Portovenere
During the tourist season, ferries to Portovenere and Cinque Terre depart from La Spezia harbor front (Porto Mirabello area). This is also the departure point for many private and group boat tours around the Gulf of Poets.

3. Florence
Florence (Firenze) is known for being a cultural and artistic hub and is an absolute must-see place when visiting Italy. Even though it’s more than a 5-hour return journey from La Spezia, the opportunity to see this unique city can’t be ignored. And many cruise passengers will scramble to enjoy this day trip from La Spezia!
What To See & Do
If you enjoy art, architecture, and delicious cuisine, then you’re in the right place!
There are so many iconic landmarks but the most famous are the Duomo, the Uffizi Gallery, and the Ponte Vecchio. Oh, and how can I not mention Michelangelo’s David. Seeing him is hard to put into words. My best attempt is to say he’s magnificent. Do not skip seeing David. You’ll kick yourself and regret it forever.
How to Make it Special
Florence is a foodie heaven. Even a panini from Panini Toscani can be an indulgence! Of course, a juicy Florentine steak is a must-try, and I guess it’s almost compulsory to get a gelato!
Get up high and enjoy the Florence skyline at these beautiful rooftop bars:
- Aria at Tivoli Palazzo Gaddi
- View on Art at Hotel Medici
- Loggia at Hotel Palazzo Guadagni
Florence is VERY popular with tourists and can get outrageously busy. A one-day trip from La Spezia is possible if you’re organized and book skip-the-line tickets (e.g. Michelangelo’s David and the Duomo). On our last trip, we did an excellent combined walking and gallery tour to make efficient use of our day!
Getting to Florence
Getting to Florence by Train
You can get a train from La Spezia to Florence on one of Italy's high-speed Freccia trains. In fact, the high-speed trains are a great way to travel between many of the major cities in Italy!
If speed and comfort are your priorities, when booking tickets, keep an eye out for the Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, and Frecciabianca options.
However, even if there are no delays, a round trip (La Spezia to Florence travel time only) will take between 5 and 6 hours. If you go by train, then you should plan your trip meticulously and book your train tickets in advance!

4. Pisa
I wouldn’t personally put Pisa high on my list of must-see places in Italy. However, it is still a pleasant day trip from La Spezia and never gets as frantically busy as Florence or Cinque Terre.
Also, if you have a strong interest in religious architecture then Pisa will fuel your passion.
What To See & Do
Pisa is famous for its Leaning Tower. But don't forget to explore the rest of the beautiful Piazza dei Miracoli.
Pisa is also in Tuscany, so take your chance to sample the famous wines like Chianti and Montepulciano, as well as hearty foods like Ribollita (traditional Tuscan soup made with vegetables, beans and stale bread), and Pappardelle al Cinghiale (pasta with wild boar).
If you’re craving carbs, then try Pizza Zanzero! This is possibly our favorite pizza restaurant in Italy (or maybe the world)!
How to Make it Special
After admiring (and climbing) the leaning tower. My personal favorite thing is exploring the city and surrounding area by e-bike. Pisa is very close to the coast, and you can enjoy a half day city and seascape adventure along a dedicated cycle path.
Getting to Pisa
There are regular trains between La Spezia and Pisa. It’s a short 1 hour train journey and there are 2 to 3 trains per hour during peak times, making it an easy day trip from La Spezia.
Trains are easy to catch, and you can book tickets in advance. We recommend using OMIO or Trenitalia for easy online bookings.

5. Lucca
Lucca is a popular northern Tuscan city for tourists. Even though Lucca gets busy, it’s a place where you can chill away from the crowds of Cinque Terre and Florence. This compact medieval city with a pedestrianized old town, is fun to explore on foot or by bike.
What To See & Do
A day strolling through the old town, elegant palazzos, and historic churches won’t disappoint. If you’re looking for a low-key day trip from La Spezia, then this is a great option.
How to Make it Special
My favorite activity is to rent a bike and cycle around the city walls. On a sunny day, you can create happy memories, enjoying the city views and picnicking in the parklands of the city walls.
Don’t miss an aperitivo in the iconic Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, a former Roman amphitheater, now serving as a bustling square lined with vibrant cafes and tourist shops.
Getting to Lucca
Trains to Lucca depart from La Spezia Central on a frequent basis and take around 1.5 hours.
You can also combine a day out to Lucca with a stop in Pisa.

6. Portofino
Portofino; a sun-kissed little piece of heaven nestled on the Italian Riviera. This is a picture-perfect postcard come to life. Its vibrant harbor is dotted with sleek yachts and fishing boats, set against the mesmerizing tapestry of typical colorful houses typical of Ligurian villages. It’s not hard to see why it’s so popular with wealthy jet setters and common tourists alike!
Although it makes for a long day trip from La Spezia, it is possible, and you won’t regret making the extra effort!
What To See & Do
A day around the harbor and weaving through the cobbled laneways is always a good start. The buildings have an ancient charm and it’s almost impossible not to snap a few iconic photos!
If you like exploring old towns and Italian history, then stop in at the Chiesa di San Martino (just off La Piazzetta). Even if you’re not religious, the decadent and lavish frescoes will have you in awe.
How to Make it Special
This glamorous seaside resort is also home to chic boutiques and acclaimed restaurants serving delicious seafood. If you want to treat yourself, then you won’t have to try too hard.
There are also a couple of walks from Portofino to lookouts and other parts of the peninsula. The hike to the Abbey de San Fruttuoso is a favorite and can also be combined with a quick dip in the sea and a return ferry to Portofino (or Santa Margherita).
Getting to Portofino
To get to Portofino from La Spezia cruise terminal you can opt for a private tour and just sit back and enjoy your day. Or plan a D.I.Y. day out!
For a self-planned trip, you can take the train from La Spezia Centrale to Santa Margherita and then hop on a local bus to Portofino. A single bus ticket costs a few euros, which will be (by far) the cheapest part of your day in Portofino! You should expect your journey time from La Spezia cruise terminal to be at least 2 hours.
7. Lerici
This sophisticated seaside town combines elegant villas, sandy beaches, a historic town, and a picturesque harbor. Lerici is most definitely a great beachy day trip for your cruise stop at La Spezia.
What To See & Do
A typical day here might include a morning stroll around the historic town, followed by lunch with a harbor view and an afternoon on the beach.
There are several bagnos (paid beach areas) where you can rent a sun lounger and umbrella and relax in comfort.
How to Make it Special
Take a short (but steep) walk up the hill and you can visit Lerici’s medieval castle fortress perched above the harbor. If you want to avoid the hill, then there is always the option to take the elevator.
At certain times there are art and cultural exhibits to enjoy in the atmosphere of the castle. The views from the castle courtyard also deserve a moment of your time.
For a truly memorable day, make an effort to also visit Tellaro. This little hamlet (borgo) is an intimate tangle of laneways and picturesque houses. Here you can breathe, experience a sense of calm, and feel a weight get lifted. Once you discover Tellaro, it’s hard to forget.
Getting to Lerici
Ferries from La Spezia harbor run during tourist season. All year round, there are buses from Piazza Europa (Comune bus stop) that will get you from La Spezia to Lerici in under 30 minutes!
There is also a handy hop-on hop-off tourist bus that circulates around the Gulf of Poets.
If you aren’t confident with public transport, then there are a number of tour options.
Getting to Tellaro
There is a small local bus from Piazza Garibaldi in Lerici to Tellaro that runs approximately every hour during the day and takes around 25 minutes. Get your camera ready, because even the bus ride will have you taking snaps at every turn.
If you’re a little nervous about using the local buses, then you may like our YouTube video that explains how to work out bus routes, where to find bus stops, and how to buy bus tickets.
8. Sarzana
Sarzana is inland from the gulf and often missed by tourists. But if you enjoy historic architecture, cultural events, art, and boutique shopping, then you should add Sarzana to your list of day trips from La Spezia.
What To See & Do
We first stumbled across Sarzana, before we moved to Liguria. It was the middle of winter. The air was cold, heavy and wet and we had to search hard to find a warm café that was open. But even so, we were enchanted by the beautiful buildings, pretty laneways, imposing fortress and quirky shops.
Even though we were planning on living in La Spezia, the idea of having Sarzana so close was a pleasant bonus!
How to Make it Special
Without a doubt, Sarzana in winter is low-key. But at any other time of the year, the town is buzzing with activity. With a seemingly revolving door of cultural events, markets, and exhibitions from Easter through to Halloween.
If you time it right, you might also be lucky to view an exhibition at MUdef at the Firmafede Fortress right on the edge of town. MUdeF often holds events and other large exhibitions by Italian and international artists. Including exhibitions of work by Banksy and Andy Warhol!
Getting to Sarzana
Trains and buses between La Spezia and Sarzana regularly run through the day. The nearest bus stop to the cruise terminal is at Piazza Europa (Comune bus stop) and you can buy bus tickets from the Tabacchi shops.
Other Ideas for Days Trips from La Spezia
Other popular day trips from La Spezia that are suitable for cruise passengers include:
- Forte dei Marmi: This rich person’s playground is an alternative to Portofino. If you love high-end fashion and swanky beach resorts, then you can indulge yourself at this seaside resort. A fun thing to do is to take a photo shoot tour of Forte dei Marmi. It’s a short train ride from La Spezia, and trains depart regularly.
- Sestri Levante: Just a few train stops west of Cinque Terre you will find yourself in this low-key but elegant coastal town. There are several beach bagnos, boutique shopping, and some notably good restaurants!
- Levanto: You’ll find this low-key beach town close to Cinque Terre – just 25 minutes by train from La Spezia. A favorite activity is to cycle the (flat and easy) coastal cycle path to two other nearby towns: Bonassola and Framura.
Or you can stay in La Spezia. If you want to experience a real Italian city that welcomes tourists with an abundance of events (even in winter), museums, and galleries. Then stay in La Spezia for the day! You can explore the city, enjoy the architecture, walk around the harbor, eat at any of the excellent local restaurants, and visit the local markets.
