Cinque Terre is open year-round. Tourists visit in every season, and you can enjoy Cinque Terre and the Ligurian Riviera at all times of the year.
But some periods of the year are better than others. In this article, we’ll explore what is the best time of year to visit Cinque Terre.
Before living here, we visited the area numerous times in different seasons.
Dry, sunny days are great for hiking and cycling.
But wet days in the Cinque Terre towns are problematic. The beaches, outdoor activities, and sightseeing are not designed for rainy weather!

When is the Best Time to Visit Cinque Terre
Given the choice, in general, the best time of year to visit Cinque Terre is from mid-May to mid-June. The flowers are in bloom, the restaurants are open, the weather is just warm enough for a dip in the Mediterranean, and you can avoid the high-season crowds.
However, the best time to visit Cinque Terre will also depend on what type of activities you want to do AND if those things are weather-dependent!
- For hiking, cycling and sightseeing, you’ll appreciate dry, warm weather. In this case mid-May to late June and early September are a good time to visit.
- For museums, galleries and churches you can visit in good and bad weather! However, some places aren’t open during winter.
- For foody experiences, you should visit between April and October. Outside of those months, many of the Cinque Terre restaurants and food and wine-tasting experiences are closed! This is typical of the small Italian tourist towns. Something I’ll never get used to!
- For beaches, water activities, local festivals and swimming, then summer is ideal.
Weather and Seasons in Cinque Terre
Obviously, you can’t predict what the weather will do, but you can stack the deck by understanding the typical weather to expect. Jump to: Our Handy Weather Charts
Our first trip to Liguria and Cinque Terre was in May 2019. We chose May because it is typically a dry month. It didn’t turn out that way!
We had rain from our first day in Italy and then on and off for a couple more weeks! We had to change some of our plans, but still found ways to make the most of our holiday even on the wet days!
To help you decide when to visit Cinque Terre, let’s take a look at the different seasons.
Spring in Cinque Terre
Spring on Italy's Ligurian Riviera is when the sleepy villages awaken from their winter hibernation. The cafés and restaurants set up alfresco tables under bright umbrellas, and more people are strolling in the narrow lanes and piazzas.
In spring the weather can oscillate a little between mild dry days and damp cold days:
- March in Cinque Terre: Activities and restaurants are beginning to open. The weather begins to warm up to around 15oC (64oF) and an early Easter can help jump-start the tourism.
- April in Cinque Terre: Most tourist businesses will be open by now, including some boat tours and outdoor activities.
- May in Cinque Terre: Late Spring is a good bet for dryer weather and temperatures around 20oC (64oF). Hotels, restaurants, shops, and tours will also be open for business.
It’s possible to enjoy afternoon aperitivo in balmy temperatures and maybe even a quick dip in the sea.
Summer in Cinque Terre
The happy summer vibe brings an excited energy to Italy. It’s certainly the best time to visit Cinque Terre if you prefer hot weather, time on the beach and you have a healthy budget.
- Cinque Terre in June is the best month for warm to hot temperatures and a low chance of rain.
- Cinque Terre in July and August can get uncomfortably hot and are the peak months for tourists!
Hiking (and any type of physical activity) in summer is a hard slog. Temperatures are often around 30oC (86oF).
But it’s a good season for boat trips and water activities in general.
Travel Tip: Because of the early sunrise (05.45am) and late sunset (09.15pm), you can escape the heat by sightseeing in the early morning or evening. Many Italians will avoid the heat of the day and close up their shutters for ‘risposo’ (an Italian version of a siesta).
Autumn in Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre in the fall experiences typical temperatures around 15-20oC (59-67oF) and early autumn (September) is a popular time to visit, but the towns aren’t overcrowded.
However, the weather in October and November can be confusing!
I remember around mid-November, there were people on Monterosso beach sunbathing and SWIMMING! And then, just a couple days later and I was sitting in my office wearing a sweater!
Late autumn (October to November) is a stormy time of year. This year (2024), it was rainy and stormy from around mid-September to late October! I was chatting to my neighbor Rosanna, (who has lived in La Spezia her entire life) and she explained that the wet season had started unusually early this year.
If you’re planning on hiking, then mid-autumn (October) is typically wet and not the best time to visit. You may also be restricted by hiking paths that are closed in bad weather, due to the potential for landslides.
However, if you’re not averse to some temperamental weather, and you’re here for the foodie experiences, museums, and churches then you can still enjoy Cinque Terre in early to mid-Autumn.
Winter in Cinque Terre
Between December and February, the temperatures are cold, but daytime temperatures rarely get below 10oC (50oF).
On clear, dry days the daytime temperatures are ideal for hiking and cycling. The sky can be a perfect blue, and the crisp air feels clean and fresh.
This past year we took a hike almost every weekend during the winter months and only experienced bad weather and rain on a couple of occasions.
The ancient Cinque Terre trails are fragile and prone to landslides. During winter the national park often closes trails for maintenance and repair works. Hiking during the low season means you have to be flexible and walk the trails that are safe and open.
Of course, winter swimming and boat excursions are only for the hot-blooded and the brave. You’ll also find that many businesses have the shutters firmly closed!!
But, unlike the other winter months, December is a popular month for tourism with Christmas events, markets, and festivities.

What is it Like in the Cinque Terre High Season
There is a sharp increase in tourists during June, July and August. It can be unbearable on the trains with excited tourists being crammed onto overcrowded carriages.
If you have no choice but to visit during these months, then there are still things you can do to avoid the crowds in Cinque Terre:
- Setting out early, book a delicious lunch and hit the beach during the middle of the day.
- Sightseeing on a private or group boat tour. A truly amazing way to see the villages.
- Hiking the trails that skim along the coast and take you up into the hills and terraced vineyards
- Book a winery tasting and tour to experience the ancient farming culture.
- Staying in a nearby town
If you have a choice (and the beach isn’t your top priority), then I typically recommend coming in late May to early June and early September to avoid over-tourism. It’s also still warm and most businesses will be open.
What is it Like in the Cinque Terre Low Season
The Cinque Terre off-season is from October to March.
If you’re on a budget, then your dollar will go a little further in the off-season, but the weather is very changeable and hard to predict.
Many tourist businesses (hotels, restaurants, shops) are closed, and the towns can feel a little deserted. But over the Christmas holidays and on sunny weekends, it can still get surprisingly busy.
Last November, we dropped in to Monterosso for the day. We walked along the beach from il Gigante (the statue of Neptune) and stopped for gelato. There was a long line! When we got to the front of the queue, it was a shock to see a fridge of almost empty gelato tubs!!
If the November gelato sales are anything to go by, then we can safely say that Cinque Terre gets tourists all year round!
But in reality, Cinque Terre can be very quiet in winter. If you want a bit more atmosphere (especially at night) you should consider using Levanto or La Spezia as a base in low season. La Spezia is a small but busy city and has a full calendar of winter events.
Wrap Up
The best time of year to visit Cinque Terre for isn’t a one size fits all.
Some things are also weather dependent AND (to make things more complicated) unfortunately the weather can vary from historical patterns.
Even so, if you have the luxury of choosing when to visit Cinque Terre, then mid-May to mid-June typically has great weather and you can experience this spectacular area without the high-season tourists.
