What is Cinque Terre?

Cinque Terre, meaning “Five Lands,” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes five ancient villages and the territory that extends around the towns.

Getting to Know: Many people misunderstand that Cinque Terre refers only to the five towns. But Cinque Terre means Five Lands. The fame that surrounds the 5 Cinque Terre villages has perpetuated this common misconception.

Settled in the Middle Ages, the local people made their home on the steep, uneven terrain. Painstakingly building over 7000 km of dry stone wall terraces to farm crops that are still cultivated today.

Cinque Terre terraced vineyards

Getting to Know: The first settlers founded their hamlets in the hills and were peasants who sought to grow grapes for the lucrative wine trade at the time. The terrain was harsh, but the climate was suitable for cultivating vines and olive trees.

Why is Cinque Terre Famous?

The Five Villages

The five colorful fishing villages emerged a little later, after the hilly farming communities.

But it’s the five villages of Cinque Terre that have undoubtedly made Cinque Terre famous. The towns listed from North to South are Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

You can find the Cinque Terre villages in La Spezia province, sandwiched between Levanto and La Spezia city.

Cinque Terre Express Train

Prior to 1870, the five towns were accessible only by sea. When the railroad was built, Cinque Terre became connected to the rest of Italy. People from the nearby towns or tourists staying on the Ligurian coast could now easily visit Cinque Terre.

The Cinque Terre Express train is now the most convenient way to get around Cinque Terre and shuttles 70% of Cinque Terre visitors to and between the villages.

The railroad paved the way for an explosion in tourism.

Tourism in Cinque Terre

The vivid colorful houses, dramatic terrain, beautiful natural scenery, delicious food, and authentic culture have proved an irresistible combination for tourists.

It doesn’t seem to matter what review or article you look at, Cinque Terre is consistently listed in the top 10 best places to visit in Italy.

Why Visit Cinque Terre

This collection of five picturesque villages is nestled along the popular Ligurian coast. Each of the 5 towns in Cinque Terre has its own distinct personality, but they share a special bond with the sea, traditional fishing culture, terraced vineyards, and a laid-back Mediterranean lifestyle.

We first came here for our honeymoon in 2019. We didn’t know a lot about Cinque Terre but we had friends who had visited. It sounded like a perfect fit for us. The coastal scenery, historical villages, good food, wineries, and hiking trails were all top of our list.

We couldn’t have been happier with our decision!

I know that a lot of people visit Cinque Terre for one day, but on our first trip, we spent 4 days here, and looking back, it felt like a whirlwind. We did so much, but we also didn’t realize we were only skimming the surface.

Vernazza - Cinque Terre on our honeymoon

That’s why I’m thrilled you’re reading this blog. I promise you. If you take a little time now to understand the 5 Cinque Terre villages, you’ll be set to enjoy the best of Cinque Terre and create enduring memories.

There’s more to Cinque Terre than the photos you see on Insta!

We live in La Spezia now and can reach Riomaggiore in 10 minutes. Lucky us! We’re also fortunate to have a regular flow of friends and family visiting Italy! And everyone wants to see the world-famous Cinque Terre UNESCO area.

So, we visit the 5 towns in Cinque Terre often. It never gets boring, and we’re still bursting with ideas and enthusiasm for things we want to see and do!

Hiking is always top of our list (of course). But also boat tours, wine tours (and tasting), horse riding, and cycling to name a few of the memorable excursions we’ve enjoyed in the area.

If you are an outdoorsy type, then you’ll love it here.

Why Visit Riomaggiore

What to See in Riomaggiore

The colorful houses and narrow streets of Riomaggiore create a bustling and vibrant atmosphere.

I can’t put into words the feeling of strolling through the ancient carugi (laneways) and seeing the view open out onto the harbor. The first time is magical.

Colorful buildings of Riomaggiore Italy

The jagged rocks and precarious tall tower houses are the main attraction. And the harbor is amongst the most photographed of all the villages of Cinque Terre. But Riomaggiore has more to explore.

Meander through the carugi and the numerous coastal paths that snake around the village. Don’t rush. Linger.

Allow your eyes to feast on the beauty of this intriguing 13th century town.

Getting to Know Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore takes its name from the stream (Rio Maggiore) that crosses the valley where the village stands. A humble beginning for what has become a world-famous town.

Before Instagram, artists were already captivated by this place and came to Riomaggiore to immortalize the harbor in their paintings.

The famous painter, Telemaco Signorini from Tuscany, fell in love with Riomaggiore and spent many years documenting the town in his paintings.

Memorable Moments

  • Visit the Church of San Giovanni Battista and the 13th-century Castle of Riomaggiore to appreciate the history and spectacular views.
  • Savor local Cinque Terre wines and learn about the region’s viticulture.
  • As you’re strolling around town, don’t miss the mosaics and street art by Silvio Benedetto.

It’s hard to ignore the glazed tiles known as the “Wall of Majolica”, located inside the pedestrian tunnel connecting the train station and the old town. But there are other works that are easily overlooked. Such as the mural of winemakers in Piazza del Vignaiolo.

The silhouette sculpture in the tunnel of the two people kissing is also worth appreciating. I believe this is a nod to the Via dell’Amore Path of Love that starts near the train station.

Where to Eat in Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore is home to some excellent restaurants, including the Michelin Guide-listed Rio Bistro. Other, more low-key places include:

Il Grottino specializes in delicious seafood and pasta dishes, and their tiramisu cups are just divine. Prices might raise an eyebrow, but their quality doesn’t make a fool of tourists.

Bar & Vini A Pié de Ma is a firm favorite, and it’s almost impossible for me to visit Riomaggiore without calling in for an afternoon aperitivo! They also serve a number of small Ligurian-inspired dishes, if you’re looking for a light meal (apericena).

Stay the Night in Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore has a good selection of accommodation, and many places have iconic views. The town also has a vibrant nightlife with cute bars and restaurants. Making it a great base.

Sollevante Guest House: $$$ Is a mid-range stay that is bright and modern. The rooms are comfortable, but the views are amazing. Conveniently located close to the train station.

The Sunset Line: $$$$ For a touch of luxury and comfort, this Riomaggiore boutique stay has coastal views and on-site parking!

Stellio Affittacamere – Guest House: $$$ Elegant guest rooms right in the iconic harbor of Riomaggiore. The hosts here are particularly attentive and will help you settle right in.

Why Visit Manarola

What to See in Manarola

The pastel-colored tall houses, narrow streets, and beautiful views attract thousands of tourists to Manarola every day.

Manarola maintains a traditional Italian atmosphere and is popular with couples looking for an idyllic spot for leisurely strolls, romantic candlelit dinners, and breathtaking views.

Manarola vista from the vineyards

Manarola is reputed to be the best Cinque Terre town for sunset photos. At the golden hour, the pastel houses can become luminous with the setting sun putting on a show for the expectant crowds.

Most people will jostle at the lookout, but we prefer to walk up past the cemetery and into the nearby vineyards along the 6P trail. The view is equally beautiful (but without the crowds).

Getting To Know Manarola

You may already be familiar with Manarola; it being home to the now outrageously famous Nessun Dorma, where you can enjoy decadent antipasto and aperitivo.

But before modern-day fame, the town had agricultural importance as a producer of wine and olive oil destined for wealthy Genovese.

Manarola Watermill Wheel
Vermentino Wine - Typical of Cinque Terre

The name Manarola is derived from an ancient word “Manaraea” in the local dialect. Which at some point is thought to have been a reference to the water wheel used during the production of the valuable wine and oil.

You can visit the large, restored water mill wheel (positioned below Chiesa di San Lorenzo) which is a proud reminder of the town’s wine and olive heritage.

Visit Cinque Terre with local insights.

We include a visit to 3 towns, suggestions for lunch, aperitivo & dinner. Also includes wine and cultural tour options, self-guided sightseeing routes, cultural and historic notes, and where to take iconic photos.

Memorable Moments

  • In the hinterland of Manarola, go to the Cinque Terre Wine Cooperative in the tiny hamlet of Groppo. Here you can enjoy stories of the viticulture tradition while sampling the local wines such as the sweet honey-hued Sciacchetrà and crisp Vermentino.
  • In winter, Manarola celebrates the festive season with a spectacular nativity scene that is lit by thousands of lights. Make the effort to walk up into the hills to stroll amongst the light show.

Where to Eat in Manarola

It’s true that both pesto and seafood are in abundance in Cinque Terre and the local restaurants all pay homage to these ingredients.

Manarola sets the bar with some excellent restaurants where you can indulge in local specialties like Trofie al Pesto (hand-rolled pasta tossed with pesto sauce) and Spaghetti alle Vongole (Spaghetti with clams).

Trattoria dal Billy: Don’t be tempted to show up without a booking! You’ll be kicking yourself if you do. Here you can find the true flavors of Cinque Terre with foods harvested from the sea, rich in tradition, and proudly uncomplicated dishes. Of course, it is priced for tourists, but the views can’t be beat!

Da Aristide: We found Da Aristide after hiking to Manarola from Vernazza. A morning that started out with a thousand or so stairs and ended with two hungry bellies. Da Aristide was a welcome stop, and we happily ate their delicious seafood and hearty pasta dishes.

La Regina di Manarola is a vibrant and trendy pizzeria overlooking Manarola village. This trendy modern eatery does AMAZING cocktails and Napolitan-style pizzas with toppings that are respectful of local Ligurian flavors.

Stay the Night in Manarola

Salty Dreams: $$ This comfortable mid-range guest house is stylishly presented and easily accessed even with luggage. Conveniently located close to the Manarola harbor you’ll find yourself in the perfect location to enjoy evening drinks before casually strolling to bed.

La Torretta Lodge: $$$$ Nestled away from the bustling crowds, this bespoke lodge is a relaxing retreat, boasting breath-taking panoramic sea vistas. Yet, it is conveniently located within a mere 10 minute walk of the train station and nearby harbor.

Hotel Marina Piccola: $$ Located in the heart of Manarola's enchanting old town, this elegantly restored hotel offers a haven of comfortable guest rooms. Its prime location is a five-minute stroll from the train station, and 10 minutes from the harbor.

Why Visit Corniglia

What to See in Corniglia

Corniglia, unlike its coastal neighbors of the other towns in Cinque Terre, is perched high on a cliff, offering a more secluded experience. Its elevated position also provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Walking around Corniglia is like exploring a time capsule and is a quieter retreat for those seeking a slower pace and an authentic Italian experience.

Its central location also makes it ideal for hikers looking to experience the numerous walking paths.

Corniglia from the SVA blue trail

Getting To Know Corniglia

While Corniglia may not be as well-known as its coastal neighbors, it has a rich history and cultural heritage.

Its hillside position made Corniglia a natural fortress, but you can still see remains of the man-made fortifications from the medieval era.

Around Corniglia, the hill terraces also grow grapes for the production of local Cinque Terre DOC wines as well as lemons and olive oil.

Memorable Moments

  • Visiting the Church of San Pietro: Admire the beautiful Romanesque architecture of the Church of San Pietro, located in the heart of Corniglia. This being the principal monument of Corniglia built from local stone. A decorative rose window being a center piece feature.
  • Relaxing in the Piazza: Take a break and simply relax in the peaceful Largo Taragio, the main square in Corniglia.
  • Hiking the Blue Path: Enjoy stunning panoramic views of the coastline as you hike the Blue Path (Sentiero Azzurro) between Corniglia and Manarola or Vernazza. Along this trail, you can also wander through the terraced farms that have been present on these hills since the 10th century.
Hiking trail in the vineyards between Corniglia and Manarola

Where to Eat in Corniglia

Due to Corniglia’s elevated position, I’ve selected two wonderful local spots where you can enjoy food and a view.

Terra Rossa Food & Wine Bar: Bookings are essential at this tiny place. And to make matters more challenging, it’s outdoor seating only. If you manage to pull it off, then you’ll be treated to a fresh slow-food experience.

Ittiturismo Corniglia SP4488: Nestled between Corniglia and Vernazza, high on the hill, Ittiturismo offers a serene escape. This charming agriturismo serves freshly caught seafood and homegrown produce. Everything is prepared with passion and shared with guests as if you were a friend. This detour from the Blue Trail is a place for creating lasting memories.

Stay the Night in Corniglia

Locanda Il Carugio: $$ A mid-range stay with a “home away from home” feel, which includes a delicious breakfast. Il Carugio is conveniently positioned in Corniglia village for easy access to restaurants and the nearby hiking trails.

Affittacamere Arbasia De Ma, Terre Marine: $$ Here, you'll discover traditionally styled coastal apartments where captivating views will have you relaxing into your holiday. You will also be spoilt with attentive hospitality ensuring a truly welcoming experience.

AMARE IL MARE Affittacamere: $$ Staying here will feel like a home away from home. Settle in with comfortable rooms and the rare convenience of car access and parking.

Why Visit Vernazza

What to See in Vernazza

Vernazza, often hailed as the most picturesque of the Cinque Terre villages, captivates visitors with its colorful houses, charming harbor, and tiny backstreets.

There are also numerous restaurants. Some with views and some in the vibrant piazza.

Vernazza maintains its traditional Italian charm and is a popular destination for couples seeking a romantic Cinque Terre getaway.

Vernazza viewpoint

For lovers of the water, Vernazza has two beaches. The one by the harbor is small and well known, but there is also a second off Via Roma. There is a cave entry that opens out onto a small pebbly beach.

NOTE: This beach is often closed due to dangerous coastal conditions!

Getting To Know Vernazza

The Disney Pixar film – Luca, draws inspiration from the Ligurian Riviera. But in my opinion, the fictional harbor of Portorosso most resembles the colorful town of Vernazza.

Luca Film Portorosso

Like Monterosso, Vernazza has an accommodating harbor. And of course, the inhabitants of Vernazza, have traditionally been fishermen and are known for a dish starring fresh anchovies, called the “tian de anciue”. You might also see it on menus as “tian de Vernazza”.

If you’re concerned about the anchovies being too salty. Don’t be. Tian de Vernazza is cooked using fresh (not salted) anchovies.

Pair it with a glass of local Vermentino and you’ll be in heaven.

Memorable Moments

  • Eroico Winery: Visit this winery to learn about the local wine-growing traditions and enjoy the opportunity to taste 3 local wines and local antipasti plates. Your hosts are a family that is proud and sincere about their role as caretakers of the land. They both love and endure this harsh land to produce Cinque Terre DOC wines from the ancient vines.
  • Visit the Castle: For a couple of euros, you can explore the tiny medieval castle perched above the town. It’s a tight squeeze up the stairs, to reach views offering a different perspective of Vernazza and the surrounding area.
  • Opera at the Church: The harbor at Vernazza is home to the ancient Chapel of the Oratory of Vernazza.

Justin and I travel with open minds and hearts. Ready to embrace local culture. When we visited Cinque Terre for our honeymoon, we were lucky to stumble across the Vernazza Opera Festival.

Vernazza Opera Festival Season 2019

The setting in the oratory is evocative, and the operatic talent is surprisingly good. Ok, (you may have noticed) we’re not opera buffs, but we enjoyed these performances, and it was a memorable experience.

During March to October, you can watch opera recitals here every Wednesday evening. Tickets are available through Cinque Terre Riviera, a local tour operator.

Where to Eat in Vernazza

Cinque Sensi Vernazza invites you into the world of Cinque Terre wine. In this intimate wine room, embark on a sensory journey of wine tastings expertly paired with savory bites like salted anchovies, pesto, and focaccia, all typical of Liguria. If you’re staying in La Spezia, then you can also enjoy an aperitivo or apericena at their Cinque Sensi wine bar near the public gardens.

La Torre is perched atop a cliff for a breathtaking view. This elegant restaurant specializes in pasta and seafood dishes created with fresh and seasonal ingredients. A pairing with local and regional wines will add to your appreciation for Ligurian flavors.

Typical seafood pasta of Liguria

Stay the Night in Vernazza

Santa Marta Rooms – Vernazza: $$ This mid-range stay is beautifully presented with a choice of rooms. It’s centrally located, but expect some stairs (this is Cinque Terre after all).

Il Ciasso' Romantic Seafront Escape: $$$$ Perched in the scenic hills of Vernazza, this luminous apartment offers captivating vistas and all the familiar comforts of home, all while being just a short stroll from the charming old town.

Pippo a Vernazza Rooms:  $ These unpretentious yet well-appointed rooms offer the convenience of an easy stroll to the train station, complemented by the rare amenity in Vernazza of lift access to guest rooms.

Why Visit Monterosso al Mare

What to See in Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso al Mare new town

Monterosso is the largest and most accessible of the towns in Cinque Terre.

Like Riomaggiore, there is both an old and new part of town. The old town has cute carugi (laneways) with artisanal shops, ancient churches, and local restaurants. The new part of town is convenient for hotels and restaurants overlooking the Ligurian Sea.

However, unlike Riomaggiore, Monterosso is mainly flat and easily accessible by boat, train, and car.

Monterosso - Fegina Beach

Monterosso is particularly popular with families and beach-goers eager to enjoy Cinque Terre’s only proper sandy beach. You may already be familiar with the famous Fegina beach and the long strip of colorful, hypnotic beach umbrellas.

It all sounds too good to be true. So, I feel compelled to add that Monterosso can get shockingly busy and crowded with large tour groups descending by boat, car, and train. But there is a lively energy, and in warm weather, the beach inspires a happy summer holiday vibe.

Getting To Know Monterosso al Mare

During the Middle Ages, local inhabitants established farms around Monterosso and cultivated grapes for the ever-popular wine trade.

Although fishing and seafood are now synonymous with Cinque Terre (and is also a delicious foodie experience for tourists), it only became woven into Monterosso’s culture and economy after the 1600s.

Ceramic Fish - street art in Monterosso old town

A reminder of the importance of the sea to these tiny villages can be seen at the northern end of Fegina Beach. Where a wealthy local commissioned a 14-meter-high statue depicting Neptune, God of the sea.

The iconic statue of The Giant (Il Gigante) stands guard over the town, and it is surely the most strange and interesting statue in Cinque Terre. It has been damaged by storms, but it’s still worth visiting as a curiosity.

Memorable Moments

Monterosso has a very active Pro Loco (local association) which organizes many events to promote Monterosso, its culture, and history. Events include:

Limoncino - Monterosso
  • The Sagra dell’Acciuga (Anchovy Festival) is held every year on the 3rd weekend of June. Later in the year (3rd weekend of September), there is yet another festival dedicated to the salted anchovy! Anchovies have long been an important commodity of Cinque Terre and can be tasted in many of the local dishes.
  • Monterosso also has a large open harbor and is a popular starting point for many boat operators. From here you can jump on a boat tour of Cinque Terre. The view from the sea is something else and is a completely different experience from squeezing onto the busy trains.

Where to Eat in Monterosso al Mare

Agriturismo Buranco is a secluded oasis nestled amidst vineyards, lemon groves, and woodlands, yet conveniently located just a short stroll from Fegina Beach. This charming agriturismo puts wine front and center, proudly pairing its labels with traditional Italian cuisine.

Lapo’s Restaurant is more than just a pizzeria. This laid-back spot serves up a delicious mix of Italian classics, street food, and fresh salads.

Insider Tip: On a sunny day, request an al fresco table and savor a refreshing aperitivo with a sea view.

Stay the Night in Monterosso al Mare

Roca Du Ma Pasu: $$$ These luxury rooms are elegantly designed, and your stay includes a delicious breakfast. Rooms with panoramic sea views can also be booked.

La Casa del Gigante Luxury: $$$$ It’s official. I am obsessed with il Gigante! La Casa del Gigante is a well-appointed luxury apartment set into the rock statue. Positioned at the western end of Monterosso al Mare promenade, you’ll have easy access to restaurants, gelaterie, and lazy afternoons on the beach.

La Casa sul Mare: $$ Overlooking the sparkling sea, this enviable location sits directly across from the renowned Monterosso beach. While the rooms are simply styled, the true highlight is the roof terrace, where you can savor a well-deserved aperitivo as the sun dips below the horizon.

If you prefer a hotel, then Monterosso has several great options on the beach and in the old town.

To Sum It Up!

So that’s it. The five Cinque Terre villages explained!

I hope my unique guide has given you a sense of this magical place. And that you now have a better feel for the towns in Cinque Terre and how each has something a little different to offer.

So now all you have left to do is book your flight, find some great accommodation, pack your bags, and get ready to explore one of Italy’s most enchanting destinations.

FAQ

What makes Cinque Terre special is its outstanding natural beauty. And the cultural identity that has been present in the area for almost a millennium. The 5 villages of Cinque Terre are also unique in beauty and character.

Most tourists know the area because of the Cinque Terre villages. But Cinque Terre is famous for other things including the rugged beauty, pilgrimage hiking trails, Terre DOC wines, local specialty seafood, and (more recently) for being the inspiration for the Disney PIXAR film, Luca.

The five towns of Cinque Terre are in north Italy. Located west of Florence, east of Genoa, and south of Parma.

Cinque Terre (in the province of La Spezia) is well situated on the eastern Ligurian Riviera. From here you can get to Florence, Milan, and Rome within just a few hours.

In under 90 minutes you can reach Portofino, Rapallo, Chiavari, Pisa and Lucca.

Small towns close to Cinque Terre worth visiting include Portovenere, Tellaro, Lerici, Framura, Bonassola and Levanto.

Cinque Terre is not an Italian region. It is a territory that is part of a UNESCO area that includes Porto Venere, the three islands of Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto, and the Cinque Terre.

Cinque Terre is in the Italian region known as Liguria on the eastern Ligurian Riviera.

Liguria is the narrow strip of land between the Ligurian Sea on its south and the region of Piedmont to the north. The western corner borders France and on the east lies the regions of Tuscany and Emilia Romana.

The sea at Cinque Terre is known as the Ligurian Sea (an arm of the Mediterranean Sea). Being on the Mediterranean Sea makes Cinque Terre popular and accessible to cruise ship tourists docking at the nearby La Spezia port.

The closest city to Cinque Terre is La Spezia. La Spezia is conveniently located within 10 minutes of Riomaggiore along the Cinque Terre Express train line. La Spezia has hotels, restaurants, and lots to see and do and is very well connected to other parts of Liguria and Italy.
